Local base install

I'm finding the Drupal First Time User Guide pretty helpful.

Chose to get D7 up and running on my Fedora system, but since my organization has a strong preference for PostgreSQL over MySQL (partly due to the latter being owned by Oracle and partly due to replication options), I discovered some concerns from people about the D7-Postgres maturity level.  The Postgresql drupal group appears pretty dormant and the general Drupal Requirements page doesn't even list any version of postgres for D7..  But I decided try to get it up and running using Postgres 9.0.7, the latest version available in my distro's repos.  Found this guide particularly useful.

Considered the various Distribution Profiles, then decided to just go with the core installation instead, so I wouldn't be easily confused with what's core and what's a supplemental module.  Probably not a big deal of difference though.

And so it begins...

Welcome to those of you who are looking to find how at least one person goes about learning Drupal 7, with no previous Drupal experience, but with software development experience in other environments.  This is my "bootstrapping" process.

I'm hoping that this blog can help others in the future discover routes to learning that I've found helpful and perhaps some cautions regarding dead ends.  As well, I hope it provides useful to people down the road (perhaps me) who will write the next generation of tutorials and guides, because you'll see where I get tripped up and can try to prevent that for others.

This is also my first blog, so feel free to give me suggestions regarding blogging.
